About

What is RofC?

Runners of Compassion is a non-profit society whose members participate as a group in fundraising and volunteer activities, in order to provide support to a variety of charitable causes, organizations and non-traditional groups.

Our Approach

We, as runners are doing something to improve ourselves. We have made the conscious decision to improve our athletic ability, health and well-being through running.

If, in addition, we can help improve someone else’s life or advance the health of a community, be it local or global, then this is an added benefit we strive towards.

Our Goals

  • To support local and global community projects such that our funding goes as directly as possible to the target beneficiaries in order to maximize effect.
  • To act as a resource base for fledgling or unsung charitable organizations in order to help extend their capacity and reach.
  • To provide an opportunity for individuals or organizations to make a positive difference in our world by supporting Runners of Compassion-sponsored projects.

Our Values

We value deeds over words - deeds that embrace the following values:

  • Awareness
  • Compassion
  • Community
  • Openness
  • Understanding
  • Neutrality
  • Tolerance

We also believe in ACCOUNTability – to ourselves, our community, and the human race.

Our Logo

Our logo is based on the colors of the Tibetan flag – the heart represents compassion, the runner symbolizes our membership, and the globe reminds us that we are all members of the human race. Click thumbnail to see larger image.

H.H. Dalai Lama Quotation

“Compassion is a mental attitude based on the wish for others to be free of their suffering, and is associated with a sense of commitment, responsibility and respect towards others.”

How it all started

It was a passion for running and a story in a newspaper that provided the inspiration for a concept that clearly gives new meaning to the term "run with a good idea". As Director of the Royal Victoria Marathon Festival of Running, Rob Reid dreamed of partnering the marathon event with a charity.

"Running is a passion for many of us" says Rob, "It defines us. Uniting our energies for the sport and our collective wills to help those in need can bring about a healthier world."
